Earlier this year, a group of volunteers certified by the British Trust for Ornithology requested permission from the Parish Council to carry out mist netting at Millennium Wood. Mist netting is an important tool for monitoring species diversity, relative abundance and population size and is harmless to birds when carried out by trained professionals.

On 3rd November, the group put up five nets close to the entrance from the car park. In total they caught 12 Blue Tits, 2 Great Tits, 2 Nuthatch, a Wren and a Jay, all of which were ringed and released. The Wren, one Blue Tit and the Jay were adult birds whilst the remainder were hatched this year. 

It is hoped that the group will return later in the year and their findings will help to inform the Parish Council’s management plan for the Millennium Wood.
