Skanska, working on behalf of National Highways is working on the construction of the new M42 junction 5a, part of the upgrade scheme on the M42 at junction 6. Work to build new slip roads will be starting this month and Skanska is planning to demolish the old Solihull Road bridge in May. These activities will allow work on the new A4545 link road between Clock Interchange and the new junction to continue.
To allow construction of the new junction 5a slip roads to continue, narrow lanes with a 50mph speed limit will be installed on the M42 in both directions between junctions 5 and 6 from Saturday 18 March to Friday 31 March 2023. Although there will be a speed limit in place, maintaining 3 lanes should existing road capacity.
During this time there will be separate, single overnight closures of the northbound and southbound carriageways to allow the installation of safety barriers. Once complete, the narrow lanes will be in place until Spring 2024 and will allow additional space at the side of the motorway to allow workers to remove vegetation, build new junction slip roads and install new gantries (and the technology they require).
To reduce the amount of traffic travelling through the area during the restriction, signs will be placed along the motorway to advise of possible delays. Skanska apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by the upcoming work and will make every effort to manage noise levels carefullyand minimise the disruption to the local area.
Skanska will make every effort to complete this work as soon as possible. Visit their Junction 6 scheme webpage at https://www.nationalhighways.co.uk/M42J6 for further updates.
